Harmony Public Charter School

Kindergarten – Grade 6 | Edmonton, Alberta

“Cultivating Confident Leaders Through Africentric Excellence.”

A Message from the Superintendent

Hello. My name is Doug Nicholls and I have been appointed by the Board of Directors to be the Harmony Public Charter School’s first Superintendent of Schools.  It is my honour to welcome you to the school which will open for its first year of operation in late August 2026.

Harmony (HPCS) will be a school that builds an Africentric learning community that stresses student growth, values cultural heritage and promotes equity and inclusion. We will offer a Kindergarten to Grade Six program in 2026-2027, however Alberta Education (Government of Alberta) has approved the school to offer a Kindergarten to Grade Twelve program in the years ahead.  Our dedicated and experienced staff will support our students ages five to twelve in all areas of their school experience. We will encourage our parents and community members to be valuable partners in the children’s learning.

Harmony Public Charter School is fully funded by the Government of Alberta so there are no tuition fees for parents.  Our staff will teach the Alberta Program of Studies but will incorporate our Africenter learning in all classes.  We plan to include sports and cultural programs throughout the year and our students will have a well-rounded experience.  A safe, orderly and caring environment will be a top priority for our students. It is going to be a very exciting place for your children ages five through twelve. The main language of instruction will be English but we will also offer Arabic and French for all students.

There has been overwhelming initial interest in Harmony, a testament to the visionary leadership of Akram Ali Shamie, Founder and Chair of the Board, and Randy Shuttleworth, Co-Founder and Chair of the Audit and Finance of the Audit and Finance Directorate of the Charter Board. Their dedicated collaboration with parents, community elders, esteemed personalities, educators, Pan-African thinkers, and Alberta Education has culminated in a remarkable opportunity dedicated to enriching the lives of the children.

We are now at the point where we are taking your child’s registration to join us for a special learning opportunity at HPCS.  Please register your child HERE or at the school’s website  www.hpcsalberta.ca .  We are planning for 125 to 150 students so I would encourage you to complete the registration as soon as possible.

Do you need more information or assistance?  Please contact us HERE if you have any questions.

Harmony Public Charter School will be an amazing school for your children.  We look forward to creating a special place for your child and students of all abilities.
